The overall project includes water intake facilities, a water treatment plant with a designed capacity of 69\u202f000\u202fm\u00b3 per day, seven water storage tanks, 175\u202fkm main transmission pipelines and around 300\u202fkm distribution networks, delivering potable water to Nyashimo, Bariadi, Lagangabilili and surrounding residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>The pipeline corridor crosses plateau undulating terrain with seasonal heavy rainfall, soft backfill soil and uneven ground settlement risks for buried pipelines. The network mixes ductile iron pipes, steel pipes and locally sourced HDPE pipes; working pressure is rated PN16 for the main trunk line, conveying treated drinking water for urban and rural domestic supply. Standard off-the-shelf flange couplings could not cover the actual OD deviation range, and rigid flange connections were vulnerable to leakage triggered by ground differential settlement. Conflex flexible flange adaptors adopt multi-segment gripping-sealing structure: rather than relying on strict pipe dimensional conformity like rigid flanges, the elastomer gasket assembly absorbs manufacturing and on-site OD variations while preserving PN16 sealing integrity. For connections between dissimilar pipe materials (ductile-iron to steel, steel to HDPE), matched transition couplings eliminate the need for complex on-site fabrication. Incorporated dismantling joints offer axial draw-out allowance, simplifying later-stage equipment maintenance and pipeline disassembly at water-tank and pump-station interfaces.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with the alternative of site-cutting and welding conventional rigid flanges, this flexible connection scheme drastically reduces hot-work operations, lowers dependency on high-level local welding crews and compresses joint installation cycle.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Engineering &amp; Customization<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Given that several trunk-line joints fell outside standard product OD ranges, Conflex R&amp;D and engineering department performed strength calculation according to PN16 design parameters based on customer field-measured pipe OD data. Custom-modified flexible flange adaptors were developed to cover the project-specific outer-diameter tolerance window.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Flange drilling: custom machined strictly following project-specified ISO PN16 bolt hole layout to match the main EPC contractor-supplied valves and equipment interfaces;<\/li>\n<li>Gasket material: selected food-grade EPDM rubber certified for potable-water service, resisting ageing under tropical high-temperature conditions;<\/li>\n<li>Coating system: applied heavy-duty fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE) anti-corrosion coating, optimised for humid tropical buried soil to mitigate soil corrosion and microbiological attack;<\/li>\n<li>Product drawing review: Conflex issued custom fabrication drawings for the main EPC contractor\u2019s engineering approval prior to production.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Benefiting from Conflex\u2019s in-house capability of more than 500 standard product series and mature custom workflow, the whole engineering-to-delivery cycle was tightly controlled to satisfy the pre-rainy-season construction timeline. On-site hot-work cutting-and-welding processes for more than 120 key joints were largely avoided. Average installation time per critical joint was reduced by approximately 60\u202f% compared with conventional rigid-flange field fabrication. The whole batch of fittings was installed and commissioned before the arrival of main rainy season, supporting the milestone progress of trunk-line pipeline laying.
